After playing lead guitar with two minor bands, in 1963 he joined the Yardbirds, a rhythm-and-blues group in which his blues-influenced playing and commanding technique began to attract attention. He began playing the guitar in his teens and briefly studied at the Kingston College of Art. Clapton was largely raised by his grandparents.
